The rail on the edge of the page
Updated Oct 6, 2026
On articles, Annotate adds a narrow rail on the right edge of the page. It appears when there is something to offer: people you follow annotated the page, the page is behind a paywall, or it is an article you can read.
- The Annotate mark at the top pulls out a drawer that names every icon. Click it again to fold the drawer back. The first few times, the drawer opens by itself for a moment to show you.
- The slot under the mark says why the rail is here: faces when people you follow annotated the page, a lock on a paywall. Click it for the details.
- The sparkle summarizes the article.
- The bookmark saves the page.
- The arrow sends the page to someone you follow, or copies its link.
Drag the rail by the mark to move it anywhere; it stays where you put it. There is no close button. To turn Annotate off for a site, click the Annotate icon in your browser's toolbar and untick Annotate on for that site.
